In the next couple of moves, Carolus also missed a tactic to checkmate by pushing the h pawn to promote. So the game went back to even after exchanging one rook. But Carolus’ connected pawns were more advanced and he built the advantage gradually by the White King taking 2 Black pawns." Carolus went on to win the game.
Alejandro Vilchez had Black on board 2 vs Oli Bain. A draw resulted but I have no details.
Alan Papier had White on board 3 vs Tarun Pamunuwa. He says: "After I played Kf1 on move 9, I gave up the right to castle but I had control of the centre. My knights were hopping around the centre which allowed me to win his e pawn with check and then NxB. My white bishop became a monster and I won the exchange with it. He resisted bravely with his Queen and 2 knights but I was material up and had the initiative." Alan went on to win the game.
John Paines had the Black on board 4 vs Richard Barnes. He says: "Richard played the English, which I am never comfortable against, so I managed to transpose it into a QGD. My position was rather constricted in the early middle game, with my knights on d7 and e7 at one point, but the game felt drawish from early on. Both Richard and I tried to break through but after I forced the exchange of Queens in the endgame a draw was agreed. Engine analysis indicated that neither of us made a significant error or had a significant advantage at any point."
Nick Woods had the White on board 5 vs Oliver Mortimer. He says: "I opened with e4, my opponent played the Sicilian Accelerated Dragon. I set up a Maroczy bind and the game was very even until the end game where we both had one rook but I was a pawn down which was enough for my opponent to win the game."
Clifton E conceded a default on board six in advance so only five players attended from Downend E.
