Keith said to me last night that I will need the dictionary this week to look up alternatives for the word "lucky".
Keith was right.
The match started steadily enough, as they mostly do, and an hour and a half or so in to the match, Dave, Jack and Elmira had all achieved draws without much trouble, leaving Aron, Keith, and James still fighting.
Aron was unclear, and Keith was very unclear with R, N, and P for queen, in a position that looked as though it needed much thought. Trouble was, Keith was 40 minutes worse off on the clock, and didn't look to have the time needed.
James then lost the exchange, though his opponent may have been better winning a free pawn instead, but either way, James looked worse.
I went downstairs for a pint of stress relief, and when I came back upstairs, James had won! I don't know how, but it was 1 - 0 to James on the match sheet, and that was good enough for me. I'm told he got an active pair of bishops (whatever that means), and so was saved by the clergy.
Keith's opponent then misplayed the position and Keith was able to secure a draw, and suddenly, and quite fortuitously we were 3 - 2 up.
All down to Aron then, whose opponent was finding a sequence of aggressive moves, all with only the increments keeping him legal, and forced a winning position.
Then, with very very little time he missed two wins, and agreed a draw.
3.5 - 2.5 and truthfully, we "jammed" the result.
Through all of this, Aron's face never even flickered.
WARNING: Never play poker with this boy!
Another point to mention about this match is that James, having been the only player not to win against Horfield, secured our one and only, and decisive game win last night to bring home the victory, and EVERY player is unbeaten in the last two matches. The Mighty C's are a special TEAM.
