Bath B 0 - 4 Downend D

Dave was the first to finish. When I looked early on his opponent had some heavy pieces awkwardly positioned near the back rank on his queenside, Dave's pieces were placed more effectively and efficiently. It wasn't too long before Dave had won the exchange and just after, improved his material advantage to a whole rook.

My opponent started steadily but without developing any threats. In response to 15. Re1 I played Qe8-d7 essentially a waiting move as I expected him to push forward. After 16. e5 I was a little fortunate as he could trap my knight on h5, but my waiting move had meant that after the 'd' pawns captured on e5 my queen and rook would win the bishop on d3. The queens came off and my opponent was left with an open file in front of his king, doubled h pawns and my rook sitting pretty on d3 soon to be supported by the other rook from d8. My opponent fought as well as he could but in vain.

Jack's game began with much time taken over the opening moves and after a while seemed a melee of pieces with just one pawn capture. Jack's remaining time was below 20 mins when I saw a couple of captures resulting in Jack being a piece up. Jack was low on time but his opponent commented that it didn't affect him as he closed it out about the same time as I finished.

James' game was unusual as his opponent, playing white, didn't begin to develop his kingside until about halfway through the game. It turned out that he needed to castle queenside behind little pawn protection. James always seemed to be on top in the latter stages and he kept the pressure on and ground out the win.
