B team slip up at Clifton

We were disappointed to lose 4–2 to Bristol & Clifton C in a hard-fought Division 2 match. I was unable to play due to a chest infection and caring responsibilities, so I was very grateful to Alan Papier for stepping in at the last minute. He was unfortunately overwhelmed on Board 6, but without him we wouldn’t have been able to field a full team.

Board 1 saw Selikem PJ Amoako defeat Humphrey Andolo in dramatic fashion. Humphrey was in control for much of the game, converting into what should have been a winning rook and pawn ending, but misplayed the ending and then lost on time in a completely drawn position.

On Board 2, Aldrin Malibiran continued his aggressive style with the black pieces, producing a sharp attacking game to secure a convincing win against Brian Lau.

The middle boards were competitive. Graham Iwi drew with Martin White on Board 3, while Krzysztof Stosik scored a decisive victory over Aleksei Zverev on Board 4.

On Board 5, Alexis Kristoff Malibiran played very well and was a pawn up, but ran short on time and sensibly agreed to a draw by repetition against Zack Reed.

Despite a lower average rating, Bristol & Clifton C’s consistent performances earned them the 4–2 victory. While it’s disappointing to lose, I’m proud of the team and especially very grateful to Alan for stepping in at such short notice.
