In a high-stakes encounter for our promotion hopes, the team displayed great character to secure a draw against a tough Bath C side.

Board-by-board breakdown

• Board 1: Humphrey Andolo (0 – 1)

A tough battle on the top board against Bernard Charnley. Despite the rating advantage, Humphrey unfortunately succumbed in a sharp encounter.

• Board 2: Peter Chaplin (1 – 0)

A standout performance (Who writes this stuff?...ed). Playing with the Black pieces, Peter employed the Charlick Gambit, catching his opponent off guard. After a Queen trade, Peter exploited the lack of pressure to roll his e-pawn, disrupting the position and securing the win in just 23 moves.

• Board 3: Aldrin Malibiran (1 – 0)

Aldrin faced the Pirc Defence in a marathon session. He managed to win the exchange, though his opponent created a dangerous passed pawn in return. After eventually returning the material, Aldrin navigated a tricky rook and pawn endgame with precision to claim the full point.

• Board 4: Martin White (0 – 1)

Martin played the Nimzo-Indian and built a strategically winning position. However, his opponent found a desperate but resourceful Queen sacrifice that threw the game into chaos. Martin attempted to hold onto the material but was unfortunately caught in a mating net.

• Board 5: Alexis Kristoff Malibiran (½ – ½)

Playing under the junior time control, Alexis opened 1. e4 and was met with the French Defence. The game transitioned into a tense Queen and pawn ending where Alexis was a pawn down. However, his incredibly active Queen allowed him to hold the draw as both players hit the final four minutes on their clocks.

• Board 6: Aleksei Zverev (½ – ½)

A solid and disciplined performance. The game quickly reached a locked pawn structure, and with neither side able to make a breakthrough, an uneventful but valuable draw was agreed upon.

Summary:

While we were looking for the win, this draw keeps us firmly in the hunt for promotion. The resilience shown in the endgames on boards 3 and 5 proved decisive in splitting the match points. (And, joking apart, the skipper did prove there is some justification for his "unusual" choice of openings...ed.)
